The Technical Manager/Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing the technical aspects of the vessels operating for SMIT International (Gabon) S.A.

He is primarily a manager with a thorough technical insight who plans the maintenance and repairs (including dry-docking) and makes sure this is properly executed. Besides being responsible for the management aspects (work orders, ordering parts, subcontractors etc.) he is also the second line of response for practical problem solving on board of our vessels and works as a support to the engine crew of the vessel.
HIERARCHY
The Technical Manager/Superintendent reports to the General Manager.

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Senior Technical Superintendent:

-          Ensures day to day management and coaching of execution level personnel under his authority;

-          Ensures that proper Planned Maintenance is maintained in the company software for all equipment under our management;

-          Ensures that work orders and purchase orders are drafted, properly communicated and executed (follow up);

-          Makes the annual maintenance & repair budget for our vessels;

-          Ensures the efficient and effective ordering of spares and replacement parts;

-          Ensures that the critical spares store is evaluated and managed;

-          Follows expenditure against budget;

-          He communicates fluently in French and English with his subordinates, clients, contractors, suppliers etc.;

-          He ensures that the crew has the necessary documentation in the working language of the crew (French);

-          Organizes and oversees the maintenance and repair of our vessels in line with class requirements (Bureau Veritas, Lloyd, ABS etc.);

-          He prepares docking schedules and budgets and requests tenders from shipyards internationally and decides on the award;

-          He manages dry docking projects at yards in the region or elsewhere; and,

-          He manages the relationships and communications on technical and purchasing issues between SMIT Gabon and other SMIT Group entities.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

-          He knows and enforces the SMIT safety guidelines and procedures and sets an example by his own comportment (e.g. wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE))

-          He ensures strict compliance with the applicable safety procedures, particularly when performing dangerous work.

-          He participates in all safety drills and exercises. He must know his role in emergency situations.

-          He ensures that the vessels are maintained in optimal condition according to SMIT Standards and in accordance with national and international regulations, and classification society standards.

-          He uses all means at his disposal to avoid downtime of the vessels and to optimise the use of dry docking periods for maintenance.

-          He directs the work of mechanical, hydraulic, electronic and electrical maintenance, repair and maintenance of technical installations, security, facilities, and nautical and communication instrumentation of the vessel

-          He controls the order of materials, goods and spare parts for all these activities, and any requests for intervention by subcontractors

-          He manages dry docking projects of vessels according to budget, planning, logistics and technical result.

-          He manages the scheduling of technical interventions

-          He communicates effectively with the ships and crews

-          He is responsible for properly evaluating personnel under his responsibility

-          He ensures compliance with procedures and policies of the Group as a SMIT subsidiary in QHSE, he ensures that his team understands the instructions issued.

 

-          He performs all other duties within his capabilities that may be necessary for the proper operation of the technical service and the company in general.

 

EVALUATION

The assessment work will be based on the following key criteria:

-          Wearing of PPE and compliance with safety procedures

-          The maintenance level of the vessels relative to SMIT standards and the effective avoidance of downtime

-          Spending against the budget and effective execution of drydockings

-          Application of company guidelines and procedures

-          Effective coordination and execution of the work to be achieved

-          Proper management of working tools and consumables

-          Good management and coaching of the office/shore team;

-          Communication with staff on board and all teams regardless of the site.
